Tesla Powerwall, the key to a sustainable home?
How Powerwall works
Powerwall gives you the ability to store energy for later use and works with solar to give key security and financial benefits.
Powerwall is a rechargeable home battery system that is typically installed with solar panels. Powerwall system can be composed of up to 10 Powerwall including a combination of Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3. It contains additional features focusing on solar integration that enable cleaner installations with less equipment.
Integrated revenue-grade energy metering can assist you accurately monitor your solar production and home energy consumption for precise, real-time insight to your home energy, claim credit for clean energy incentives and be ready to join future virtual power plants. Powerwall is able to intelligently power heavy equipment and direct solar integration improves solar recharging during power outages than results in a better experience that ever before.
How Powerwall works with solar
When the sun rises, solar starts powering the home. When there is need for additional power, the home can pull it from the utility grid.
Powerwall is charged by solar during the day, when solar panels are producing more electricity than the home is consuming. It then stores that energy until such a time when the home needs it such as when solar is no longer producing at night.
When the sun comes out next day, solar recharges Powerwall so that you have a cycle of clean, renewable energy.
Benefits of Tesla Powerwall
Batteries are not a necessary part of solar installation. The majority of people run solar installations without a battery. So you may be asking yourself what benefits it has that will make it a better deal.
Protects against loss on net metering
Today, many governments need power companies to take part in net metering programs. Having a Powerwall can help you store your extra electricity instead of depending on the power company for that. It will assist you increase self-consumption of solar energy.
Reduces power outages
When using net metering, you can sell excess electricity from your solar back to the energy company. This implies that even when they are not generating power, they help in saving you money. However, using the grid is not of much help to you when the power goes out.
A Powerwall will help you save your own power. This does not only mean you will be sitting comfortably with the lights on while everyone else stays in the dark but also allow you to further lower how much you depend on the electricity company.
Tesla’s lithium-ion batteries are made from materials that are recycled. They work with different partners to recycle spent cells, modules, and battery packs so they can refresh and reprocess those materials to use for new products. These lithium-ion batteries are in all Tesla Powerwall, electric vehicles, and charging stations. When those batteries reach the end of their life, they are recycled and used again.
Increase property value
Residential batteries help to improve the value of a property. Solar can increase their usefulness during power outages. These are beneficial improvements to consider investing in your home. Not only do they add monetary value to the property, but also less dependency on the grid for energy.
Many people have made a lot of effort to help reduce the effect of global warming. The Powerwall is a great step that you can take as an individual to lower your carbon footprint even further than solar power alone can. While net metering is great, at night your property is still operating from fossil fuels. But Powerwall helps reduce environmental pollution or in some cases completely do away with it.
Recycling of materials in the manufacturing of Powerwall, cars and energy products is important. Tesla’s facilities have made a lot of effort to manage their material stream in a way that is environmentally friendly. Over 90% of the materials at the factory are generated from landfill sites. They ensure they recycle any material that can be re-used.
Settings available for Powerwall
On self-powered mode, Tesla Powerwall will store any excess energy your solar produces during the day time to power your home at night. This option is only available for people with solar panels.
With backup-only, you can set your Powerwall to save its power for an outage. The Powerwall will act a source of energy for your home when power goes out. Once power on the grid has been restored, you will get a notification from Powerwall.
